Celebrate and Engage!

Co-sponsored by the Obermann Center and the UI Graduate College for ten years, the Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement and the Academy has been helping University of Iowa graduate students from across colleges and disciplines think about how to weave engagement into their research and teaching. For a week each January, a small competitively selected cadre works with two UI faculty members and a host of visitors to fine tune a project, discover the roots of public engagement, think about issues of ethics, assessment, and funding, and learn about a community partner.

Today, there are nearly 200 alumni of this groundbreaking program who are working literally around the globe, sharing the principles of the Institute in colleges, K-12 schools, museums, arts organizations, and state and national government agencies. Learn more about their work on this stories site.

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS is both a celebration of this program and an opportunity to hear from engagement leaders — especially our alumni and two esteemed guests. On March 3 and 4, 2016, anyone can participate free of charge in this symposium that will include roundtables, workshops, keynotes and good old fashioned conversation about what makes engagement work worthwhile – what it looks like when it sings – how to be an effective collaborator – and how to be an engaged scholar whose work is recognized. Join us for community, conversation, and creative inspiration!
